Task_3-4 Authentic Assessment (Week #13 Group #1)

Authentic Assessment

Group work reflects the different strategy using various technique of assessment, for example kinetics hands on skills, applying reading comprehension through websites such as kidbiz.com.  Students challenge their own reading levels, learning contextual writing, punctuation, critiquing the concept of fictional or non-fictional books.  Students will learn the concept on recycling within their own environment and how it is applied to their resources of reading materials.  Understanding that given assessments is to build upon grammar vocabulary, writing-skills, comprehensive understanding, and how reinforcing such assessment in various ways to either have students to succeed toward their goals.  As a future teacher, various teaching assessments help to validate your lesson-plans through given assignments.

Our group seemed to think that the following three ways of communication were effective, especially when taking an online course.

The first way of communication we thought effective was e-mail.  Using e-mail is normally recommended, if not required to use while in an online course.  Even for traditional classroom settings, using e-mail to contact your classmates or the teacher is a great way to keep updated.  Being a part of the new technology world, we seem to all know how to use e-mail and tend to check them regularly.  It's also good because messages are private so that only those that you send the e-mail to, can view it.

The second way of effective communication is through a type of forum.  Our class is able to use the forums on Laulima.  Forums seem to really be helpful, especially for group discussions.  Because we normally are not able to meet up, the forum board allows us to post our thoughts and information in an organized manner, and we can always review them if needed.

The last way of communication we thought works well is contact through texting via cellphone. A lot of us seem to already own a cellphone and texting has been a major communication tool.  Because we normally have our cellphone on us at all times, it's very easy to send and receive text messages almost immediately.  If that doesn't work, there is always calling as well.

Our group thought that the Edmodo website seemed like a great Web 2.0 tool to use, to support effective learning in and outside of the classroom.  It is built just like a social networking site, very similar to Facebook.  Edmodo is a great website that easily allows students communicate with each other, as well as the teacher.   With Edmodo, teachers can create private groups for each class,  create calendars that shows due dates, start discussions for the students, and create polls for students responses.  Students will be able to discuss and share ideas with each other, even when not in class, as well as submit their assignment to the teacher.  With so many things to offer, this website is safe and easy to use, for both teachers and students, and it's a great way to incorporate technology into learning.

Our group decided that this YouTube video provided by edutopia.org was an excellent example of differentiated instruction using technology.  Teachers at Forest Lake Elementary School provide a variety of new aged technology (computers, laptops, smartboards, etc.) and programs that assist students to better understand and enjoy learning.  Teachers also use technology to track and assess students progress, which helps to determine what level a student is at and then finding a learning strategy to help them improve and keep moving forward.  With the support of the technology used, they also use a model for teaching called IPAC or Individualized, Personalized, Authentic and Collaborative (Learning).  This allows students to explore different learning styles while still learning the subject matter assigned, then presenting their new knowledge in a way that's most comfortable for them using the technology provided. With technology having such an impact on our lives today, we should all use them to our advantage in assisting us with allowing our students to express their learning in multiple ways.  It allows students to explore different learning styles, be more creative and express their personalities, and find new ways to enjoy learning.

Self Introduction

Cherez' Bio
(Pronounced: Sher-Ray Bee-Yo)

A Little More About Me:
I graduated from Farrington High School, 2009.  I currently work as a PPT for their Teacher Academy.  I come off as shy, but if you get to really know me, you will find out otherwise.  I think I'm weird.  I enjoy laughing, a lot.  I love to have fun.  I love my family and enjoy time with friends.  I love music.  I'll give all genres of a music a chance before I judge it.  I love to sing, I think I'm fairly good at it.  I like to pretend I know how to play guitar.  I sometimes enjoy doodling.  I'm not much of an artist, but other than music, it helps me relax and express myself.  My favorite color is pink.  I'm a bit obsessed with it.  I also like cherry blossoms, Hello Kitty things, Princess things and things that light up.  Like, I REALLY like things that light up.  I told you, I'm weird.  :D

Fave Technology Gadget:
I think my favorite technology gadget would have to be my cellphone.  Right now, I have a T-Mobile Sidekick 4G.  I've always thought the Sidekick was really cool.  This is only my second Sidekick.  The first one I owned was the Sidekick ID, which was slightly smaller and had interchangeable bumpers.  Comparing the two, the Sidekick has changed a lot in so little time. The Sidekick 4G is now a type of Android cellphone, so of course, it has all of these different apps and things that you can download.

I would say my Sidekick if my favorite gadget because, I always have it with me and I use it constantly throughout the day.  I use it for different things.  Of course I text a lot, I'm almost always on Facebook (I know, I know...), I use it for taking pictures, I listen to music, usually Pandora radio... And of course I use it as a regular cellphone to make calls when needed.  So, my Sidekick is used for different things, and it comes in handy.

Work Style:
I can be a little shy sometimes, so normally, I keep to myself for a bit.  And you would think maybe, online courses are my kind of thing, because there is less interaction between other people.  But that is definitely not the case for me.  I honestly rather take face to face, in the classroom kind of courses.  I may be a little shy, but once I start to warm up to people, I get over that nervousness a little.  And for me, it's a lot easier when actually working with people one on one.  I think you get to know them better and you can figure out what's going to make working together a success that way.

I would say that I am a hard worker.  I will admit there are times I do end up slacking off.  However, I am able to pick myself back up and get the work done.  Sometimes I find that I work better under pressure.  But when it comes to group assignments, I make sure that I am doing my part and trying to keep up as best as I can.  I know what it's like to be part of a group where, you are the only one putting in the work, and everyone is totally slacking off.  I do not want to be that person of the group, so I promise I will do the best I can, and make sure my part of the project is up to par.

Another thing I could say about myself, is that I am creative.  I also think that presentation is a big part of a project.  So not only the information that we put into it, but how it looks on the outside as well.  When working on projects, I try to organize the pieces to it, in a way that makes sense and is easy to follow.  I also like to make sure that it represents myself, or represents my group well.  And I make sure that it doesn't look too boring, yet at the same time, look like there's too much going on, which would take away from the actual info that's put into the project.
